Mickma Tshering Lepcha has been born and brought up at Tashiding, Nyoldhang Busty in West Sikkim. Born in a Lepcha family, he had strong feeling and eagerness towards the Lepcha folk songs and music. He has been learning and performing Lepcha folk songs and music since school days. Currently, he is working at Songs and Drama Unit, Culture Department, Govt. Of Sikkim and “Sofiyum”, a Lepcha folk fusion band, based in Gangtok. He has been performing and representing Lepcha music of Sikkim in and outside Sikkim. His sole interest in the coming days will be that he shall always work to conserve, promote and safeguard this beautiful art form of the Lepchas of the world.
He served as an assistant musician in “Guru Shishyas Parampara” for two consecutive years (2007 to 2009) under Guru,Padmashree Mrs. Hildamit Lepcha, sponsored by North East Zonal Cultural Centre, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, Dimapur. He also worked as Guru for “Lepcha Puntong Polit” under the scheme of Guru Shishyas Parampara, sponsored by Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, Kolkatta, in year 2010 to 2011. He has gained the knowledge of making Lepcha Traditional instruments such as Tungbuk and Sutsang from Guru Ren. Dik Tshering Lepcha of Gitdabling, Kalimpong, West Bengal in 2015. He has also worked for Election commission, schools and for the welfare of girl child involving self in Beti Padao Beti Bachao composition, D.D Gangtok and NorthEast, as well as All India Radio, Gangtok. He worked with British Council in a music project called “Mix The City”, under Eclectic Northeast (2018). 2017 to 2018 Mickma worked with Oscar awardee Mr. AR Rahman in a folk documentary series called “Harmony with AR Rahman”, sponsored by Amazon Prime Videos under the Kavitalaya film production house, Chennai.
