“I’ve been seeing chi in almost all the Lepchas’ rituals, and I wanted to know the reason behind.”
Passang Dem Lepcha
“I knew from the start that I don’t just want to go on collecting stories, I wanted to be a part of that story, I wanted to experience it physically and emotionally. I personally feel that to preserve our rich tradition and
culture, we need to learn and experience how our forefathers have lived. That is why I went to the field and learnt how millet cultivation is done. That was the most enriching experience that I got through this project.”

Knowledge Keepers behind the expression
“I went back to my ancestral place to collect stories, it is located in Phamtam, North Sikkim. I wanted to capture the millet cultivation, and I was there at the right time which I felt was nothing but a pure sigh that I was on the right track. There I met Ajyo and Nyukung, both are above 80, and briefed them about my project and fortunately they too were eager to help me with my work.
We went to the field around 9:30 am. Once we reached I took some pictures and started my video recording. One thing which I failed to capture is black snake which came running while they were clearing the land .
The ambiance was peaceful, it was a small land surrounded by trees all around and just below there was a paddy field.”

“For the first time I was introduced to our great great grandparents way of living and the way they share such an intimate relationship with nature and its divine beings. Now I can proudly say that I’m the product of those great forefathers who celebrate love, harmony and peace with all living beings. The forefather who worshiped mountains, rivers, fire and all the elements who guide us and protect us till now.”
