“Mountains are very symbolic and meaningful for the Lepcha community and with the ecology around us dwindling I wanted to work on a project that would capture these two elements. As I started working on my research I realized that the wind around us carries stories of the past and whispers of the days to come. With this project, I wanted to share the echoes from the mountains that I heard. Of the stories of my ancestors, my roots and the ecological needs of today’s time. The more I listened to these echoes the more I questioned myself if I was going to stop, pause and listen to them or just hear them and scoot by.” Anugrah Pandi Lepcha
“My heart is deeply rooted in ecology and knowing Lepchas also have a heart deeply rooted in ecology, I choose this area of study for my project. As for the topic, I firmly believe the mountains speak to us and her voice echoes through the hills and valleys, it is only a matter of us learning to pause, quieten down and listen to the echoes of the mountains.” Anugrah Pandi Lepcha
“Liberating is the word that describes the journey and the outcome of the project for me. It was challenging to choose artwork as a form of medium for my work because art was always been one of my biggest insecurities. I am also someone who usually likes to listen to narratives rather than share a narrative of my own. This opportunity given was a strong push for me to break from the academics and express my findings in a manner that spoke to me the most.
The notion of “not good enough” was broken for I learnt that every narrative which stems from goodwill is good enough to be heard. To be able to break free and soar in ownership of one’s own narrative as one’s own without any shame, guilt, or burden, but rather with pride, ownership and stewardship was such huge learning that I carry in my heart henceforth.” Anugrah Pandi Lepcha
